May 26th is National Heat Awareness Day. Resulting in numerous fatalities each year, heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States. It’s always unknown just how hot the summer will be but most American summers see heat waves in one or more parts of the United States. Some regions have both high temperatures and high humidity. However, some of the worst heat waves have been dry.
When heat advisories are put into effect, it is important to take precautions.
- Stay hydrated (drink lots of water)
- Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks and extra sugar
- Avoid over-exertion
- Find a cool place to stay
Don’t forget about your pets! They can suffer from the heat as well.
- Provide plenty of water so they stay hydrated
- Never leave your pet in a hot car
- Don’t let your pets over-exert themselves
